It was believed in the ancient cultures that the third finger of
the left hand had a vein known as the “Vena Amoris” or “The Vein of Love”. It
was said that the vein ran from the third finger directly to the heart.
Although, the third finger was myth, as the years past, the third finger became
more know as the “ring finger”. In 1549, England’s King Edward VI declared that
the third finger of the left hand be the official ring finger. Following King
Edward VI decision, the Book of Common Prayer designated the left hand as the
marriage hand.
In addition, the ring was known as a complete circle with no
beginning and no ending. The ring signified perfection and endlessness
representing never-ending unity. Furthermore, the diamond of a ring was thought
to be indestructible and incredibly strong. Signifying that the person giving
the ring was also incredibly strong and being that the ring is indestructible,
the ring would last forever just like their love for each other.
